Learned Quake 2 modding to recreate Instagib Blasters

After a bout of nostalgia, I learned the basics of Quake 2 modding then created a mod that’s currently live. Learn how to play here.

It recreates the classic “Instagib Blasters” that a friend once made many years ago. Of course it has my own spin:

  1. The standard blaster — pea shooter — now instagibs everything. But watch out, it drains your own health.
  2. You start with unlimited hand grenades.
  3. You also start with a Railgun and slow-regenerating slugs.

Quake 2 modding is unusual, because the standard modding technique involves editing game engine source code, recompile it, then deploy it on your server. Most other games with a modding community have it far easier — modify a game script file, not pure C.
